The Temple of the Sun at Konārk

Hindu Temple Deities

Arts and Architecture of Northern India Zoom Series

Presented by: Richard Barz

This talk will introduce two Hindu temples in Odisha: Konārk (13th c) dedicated to Sūrya the sun god and Lingarāja (11th c) where the god Shiva is worshipped. Konārk, a UNESCO World Heritage site, represents Sūrya’s chariot with its wheels and sides covered with superb carvings and statues, some erotic. Lingarāja, one of the magnificent temples in the city of Bhubaneshwar, is an outstanding example of Indian architecture. However, unlike Konārk, it is a functioning temple attracting great numbers of pilgrims every day: an excellent place to appreciate the vigour of contemporary Hinduism.
