The craft of artisans in the Kashmir shawl community, like other craft communities throughout India, is an elemental part of the social fabric that connects their domestic, cultural, and religious purposefulness, its skills and techniques learnt mostly through intergenerational observation. While in many Indian craft communities the skills are being lost, or product quality diminished, the Kashmir shawl community continues to thrive. Through promotion of their slow fashion ethos and use of digital connectivity, Kashmir shawl artisans now interact with a consumer base supportive of slow fashion and ethical business practice in the fashion industry.
Dr Deborah Emmett has skills in graphic design, photography and print making. Her career in design has been as both an educator and researcher, as well as textile designer for her business, Tradition Textiles. In 2023 she completed a PhD, the research focus on co-designing with textile artisan communities in India with case studies undertaken with artisans from the Kashmir shawl community.
