Presented by: Christina Sumner
India’s absorbing cultural traditions include acclaimed mastery in the production of an outstanding range of exquisite textiles. The Indian artisan’s legendary skills in creating beautiful fabrics include weaving itself, mordant painting and resist dyeing, block printing – and embroidery, the ornamental surface embellishment of cloth, typically with needle and thread.
Lucknow and Kolkata are home to celebrated embroidery traditions: in Lucknow, the delicate art of chikankari, meaning white work, and mukaish, the decorative insertion of metal ribbon; in Kolkata, kantha, originally signifying a poor man’s wrap, and satgaon, named for the 16th century Portuguese trading centre Satgaon.
