Austronesian Migrations and the Textiles and Sculpture of Southeast Asia

The idea of a culturally connected people spreading from the Southeast Asian coastal mainland through insular Southeast Asia from the Solomon Islands and the Pacific as far as Easter island and New Zealand is not difficult to imagine. What is extraordinary, however, is the amazing feats of navigation. These far- flung peoples are linguistically connected; Austronesian language speakers started their journey southward from Taiwan some 5000 years ago. This illustrated talk will focus on examples of the similarities of artistic expression embodied in Southeast Asian cultural artefacts

Ross Langlands
Speaker, Ross Langlands is a former school teacher who became interested in oriental rugs and worked from 1970 in the wholesale trade in Zurich, Switzerland. After returning to Australia in 1975, he established Nomadic Rug Traders, a gallery dealing in oriental rugs and textiles with his wife, Irene. In the 1980s and 1990s their dealing interests spread to encompass Southeast Asian and tribal art. Ross is a past president of the Oriental Rug Society of NSW and the Antique Dealers Association of NSW and is a founding member of TAASA.

Members are invited to bring along textiles or sculptures relevant to the presentation.
