Silent Ritual: Zai Kuang & Xiaoyu Bai Paintings

Presented with Chinese Ceramics and Scholar Objects

The Exhibition
Subtle modulations of light and tone animate the oil paintings of artists ZaiKuang and Xiaoyu Bai. They have been painting since the mid 1980s and their works range across monochromatic domestic interiors and nature studies, in each case producing contemplative scenes that suggest universal awareness before shifting to single-pointed focus.

Their works are the product of a disciplined approach to painting; yet unlike many Chinese artists of the ‘85 New Wave Movement who embraced iconoclastic practices, their tendency is to invoke an entirely refined modality reminiscent of classical Chinese aesthetics. The coloration of Qingbai, celadon and persimmon glazes are echoed in these paintings, while the simplicity of the ‘chawan’ tea bowl and the daily rituals it contains are suggested in the casual placement of objects. Naturalism and simplicity of form were highly valued by Song Dynasty scholars and are here reflected in these paintings.
