What makes classical Chinese gardens so evocative? In this richly illustrated talk, architectural historian Stanislaus Fung explores how Suzhou gardens challenge Western ideas of perspective and scale, offering instead a choreography of shifting views, subtle concealments, and spatial ambiguity. Drawing on years of close observation and fieldwork, Fung reveals how these gardens stage a poetic interplay between movement, memory, and visual perception—inviting us to see differently. This lecture will appeal to anyone curious about Chinese aesthetics, garden design, or the art of looking.
Stanislaus Fung is Adjunct Associate Professor of Architecture at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. His recent work can be found in The Garden Retreat in Asia and Europe (edited by Yue Zhuang, Alasdair Forbes, Michael Charlesworth, 2025) and in Jianzhushi (Beijing).
