KIMONO EXHIBITION AT NGV

A Lecture by Wayne Crothers

A treasured item instilled with sentimental memories and cultural references
for the people of Japan, and an artefact of wondrous design and beauty
internationally, the kimono has become one of the most representative objects
of Japanese art, design and culture. This exhibition displays historically
significant and visually dynamic examples of costume and fashion from
Japanese history and establishes a creative lineage to the most experimental
and innovative fashion designers of today. Wayne Crothers, Curator of the
exhibition, will present selected highlights of this beautiful exhibition which
will be on at NGV until 5 October.

The exhibition comprises intricately decorated kimono worn by samurai and
wealthy merchants during the Edo period, ostentatious Noh and Kyogen
costume, festive kimono of the working classes from the Meiji period, Japan’s
influence on Western fashion from the late nineteenth-century, Japanese
modernist fashion from the early twentieth-century and kimono ensembles of
imaginative street fashion designers active in Japan today.
