SUMMARY:Japonisme: a Revolution in Arts and Design
DESCRIPTION:Please join the curatorial team of Amanda Dunsmore\, Senior Curator International Decorative Arts and Antiquities\, Wayne Crothers\, Senior Curator Asian Art and Matthew Martin\, Curator\, International Decorative Arts and Antiquities\, as they guide us through the NGV exhibition Japonisme: Japan and the Birth of Modern Art. \nIn 1854\, after a period of over two hundred years of self-imposed isolation\, Japan was forced by the United States to open its borders to international trade. The resulting influx of Japanese artworks into Europe and America\, including woodblock prints\, ceramics\, lacquer and textiles\, triggered a veritable revolution in the arts and design. \nThis exhibition draws upon works from across the NGV Collection – including decorative arts\, works on paper\, paintings\, fashion and textiles\, photography and Japanese art – to explore the impact of Japanese art and design upon the arts in the West in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. \nRSVP by 12 June 2018 to Anita Archer at vic.taasa@gmail.com. For further information\, call Anita on 0402 067 070.

SUMMARY:Hokusai
DESCRIPTION:Join Wayne Crothers\, Curator of Asian Art\, for a viewing of the major new exhibition Hokusai. Hokusai is regarded as one of the most influential and creative minds in the history of Japanese art. His unique social observations\, innovative approach to design and mastery of the brush\, made him the most famous and popular artist of Edo period Japan as well as an internationally recognised artist. Although gaining fame during his lifetime he never attained financial success. His years of greatest artistic production were conducted in poverty\, living in a hut by the Sumida River or spent travelling\, drawing and painting. \nIn 1909 the NGV purchased five works from Hokusai’s iconic Thirty-six views of Mt Fuji series including his most celebrated image The great wave\, two works from his Tour of famous waterfalls series and four other major works. These astute acquisitions established a legacy of Japanese art in Australia that has now extended for over one hundred years. \nHokusai features 129 prints\, four paintings and ten rare books on loan from the Japan Ukiyo-e Museum\, Matsumoto\, with special features including a selection of Hokusai’s early works and complete sets of his most famous series including Thirty six views of Mount Fuji\, Tour of famous waterfalls\, Unusual views of celebrated bridges\, Eight views of the Ryukyu Islands\, Birds and flowers and Ghost tales. \nHow to book: Please email Boris Kaspiev at vic.taasa@gmail.com or phone 0421 038 491 by 21 July 2017. \nHow to pay: By direct deposit with ‘your name\, Hokusai’ as reference: \nAccount Name: The Asian Arts Society of Australia \nBSB 012 003 \nAccount Number: 2185 28414 \nor via this website – see Booking button above right. \n
