SUMMARY:TAASA INVITATION TO A GUIDED TOUR OF THE EXHIBITION 'AND STILL I RISE'
DESCRIPTION:And Still I Rise brings together twenty culturally diverse women artists\, most of whom live and work in Australia. Spanning generations\, cultures and medium\, the exhibition draws on lived experience and inherited memory to offer fresh perspectives on identity\, history and belonging. \nDrawn from the Art Gallery of New South Wales collection and enriched by new commissions and key loans\, And Still I Rise moves beyond established narratives to explore a multiplicity of voices\, inviting a reconsideration of contemporary Australian art. \nABOUT NATALIE SEIZ\nDr Natalie Seiz is the Curator of Asian Art at the Art Gallery of New South Wales and curator of this exhibition. She completed her PhD in Art History and Film Studies at the University of Sydney in 2013\, focusing on the emergence of contemporary women artists in Taiwan from the late 1970s to the 2000s. SUMMARY:A Survey of Thai Ceramics
DESCRIPTION:TAASA members in two groups\, each restricted to 10 people\, had the opportunity to closely examine some Thai ceramics at the archives of the AGNSW. Ably led by Matt Cox\, Assistant Curator\, Asian Art\, and collector\, John Yu\, members enjoyed a chronological overview of ceramics from the Ban Chiang period (c.2nd century BCE) of northeast Thailand and other northern kilns of Kalong\, Paan and Phayao\, and from the later southern sites of Sukhothai and Sawankhalok. \nAlthough many of the earthenware and stoneware ceramics from 12th -16th c. were made for domestic and ritual use\, they were also traded with neighbouring Southeast Asian countries via maritime routes\, particularly when China’s ceramic trade was halted around the 15th c. Bodies ranged from more heavily potted clays to very finely crafted pieces. Glazes were mainly underglaze (iron brown or black) with some celadon glazes. Decoration was either delightfully freehand style or carefully incised.
