The Timeless Beauty of Whitewares

Our May 3 Ceramics Study Group meeting will focus on ceramics in various shades of white, and members are invited to bring along their pieces to share with the group.

Whitewares have an appeal that is universal and timeless. From China as early as the Tang period, whitewares constituted a significant component of the ceramics exported in vast quantities throughout Asia and as far as North Africa. But many parts of Asia have their own ceramic whiteware tradition, such as the white bodied ceramics produced in Vietnam from around the 1st to 3rd century CE, white stonewares from the Sawankhalok kilns in Thailand and the splendid whitewares of the Joseon period in Korea from the 1400s.

In this CSG meeting, we hope to explore the range of whiteware traditions, drawing on our members’ collections and collective knowledge.
