Kolkata Marble Palace

The Rajbaris of Calcutta: Architectural and Cultural legacy of the Bengali Badralok

Arts and Architecture of Northern India Zoom Series

Presented by: John Zubrzycki

The stately mansions of Bengal’s zamindars or land-owning gentry, known as rajbaris, are a syncretic mix of local and Neo-classical European styles. They can be found all over what is now the state of West Bengal but the greatest concentration is in north Kolkata (formerly Calcutta)—an area known in colonial times as Black Town. The most famous of these is the Marble Palace, still owned by the Mullick family and open to the public. It features a Neo-classical facade and Corinthian pillars and incorporates a traditional Bengali plan with open courtyards.
