Calcutta Art Studio Kali/Tara c1885
Presented by: Jackie Menzies
The major Hindu goddess Kali, Mistress of Time and Death, is instantly recognisable by her distinctive appearance and attributes. She is dark-skinned, emaciated, dishevelled and fearsome; she carries an unsheathed sword that alludes to her power to overcome all evil. Kali belongs to the Great Goddess (Devi) tradition that embodies shakti, the feminine energy and creativity that is the source of life.
Kali is prominently worshipped in West Bengal where the Kalighat temple in Kolkata gained fame for its Kalighat paintings. These paintings as well as other examples of Kali paintings, sculptures, prints and temples will be the subject of this talk.
