Tales From the East

An Illustrated Talk by Lindie Ward

Tales from the East – An illustrated Talk by Lindie Ward

India had many centuries of expertise in the production of cashmere shawls, silks, embroideries, printed and painted chintzes and muslins. India textiles were famous the world over and were traded through the East India Company. The politics of the French Revolution of 1789 had diverted fashion tastes from rich, ostentatious silks to the finest ‘simple’ muslins. These textiles perfectly suited Sydney’s subtropical climate and became de rigueur during Lachlan Macquarie’s governorship of New South Wales.

Our speaker, Lindie Ward, who is an independent dress and textile specialist with many years experience as a curator at the Powerhouse Museum, will discuss some of the rare textile treasures that have come to light from the National Trust Collection and elsewhere. They will feature in an exhibition ‘Tales from the East’ at Old Government House, Parramatta, telling the fascinating story of Governor Macquarie’s time in Sydney from 1810 – 1821 and his connections to India.

The exhibition runs from April 28 until August 26th, 2018.

Members and guest are invited to bring along pieces they would like to share and discuss.
