Small Delights: Collecting Miniature Ceramics

TAASA Ceramics Study Group, Sydney

People collect small ceramic objects for a range of reasons. They may be beautiful or unusual pieces for daily or special use such as tea or sake cups. Perhaps purely decorative objects that appeal. Miniature objects can sometimes lend themselves to obsessive collecting on a large scale.

Michaela Russell will introduce this topic with some interesting museum and private collections of miniature ceramics around the world, including scholars’ objects, while Kerry Ngyuen-Long will mainly talk about 15th century Vietnamese miniature ceramics, with a few examples from her collection. Jackie Menzies will focus on small objects in her collection related to the theme of ‘drinking’.

Participants are encouraged to bring their own miniature ceramic pieces to share and discuss.

Light refreshments will be provided.

Cost: $25 members, $35 non-members.
Places are limited. Please make bookings and payments online via this website.

Jackie Menzies: During her time as Head of Asian Art at the Art Gallery of New South Wales (1980-2012), Jackie researched, acquired and published many pieces of Asian ceramics now in that collection. She wrote entries on individual pieces for two Handbooks published on the Asian collections. She also travelled often to Asian where she got to drink local brews across Asia.

Kerry Nguyen-Long is an eminent Asian art historian and author, a long term member of TAASA and a former committee member. Kerry has researched the arts of Vietnam for many decades and has made a most valuable contribution to redressing the lack of English language knowledge about the art and culture of that country. She has been a contributing editor of Arts of Asia magazine since 1999.

Michaela Russell is a retired geologist with interests in textiles and natural dyeing. She has been an independent researcher of Chinese porcelains from the 1870s-1970s for almost 30 years. She is the current convenor of the Ceramics Study Group (CSG) for TAASA.
