PAPER, INK, AND EMPATHY: THE HIDDEN LIFE OF EPHEMERA & TAASA AGM

Wine, Food, Ephemera and Books

Sally Burdon of Asia Bookroom, Canberra, will discuss how seemingly modest artifacts such as pamphlets, personal papers, propaganda handouts and maps often reveal rich narratives and cultural insights. She will be showing select examples of the ephemeral material she handles while speaking on the philosophy that guides Asia Bookroom.

Sally has handled notable historic items such as a Chinese Opium War album, Korean prisoner-of-war manuscripts, Qing dynasty charts and maps, rare Japanese maps, and missionary archives. Asia Bookroom not only curates these treasures but also collaborates with research libraries to ensure their preservation and has successfully placed significant collections into major libraries worldwide. By finding homes for sensitive and significant items in academic institutions and libraries, Asia Bookroom plays a crucial role in safeguarding items of profound historical significance.

Sally Burdon is the owner of Canberra’s specialist bookshop dedicated to works on Asia and the Pacific. Sally has been a bookseller for over 40 years and has exhibited Asia Bookroom’s stock at leading international book fairs and academic conferences in New York, Hong Kong, Australia, and the US. She has served on the boards of both the Australian and New Zealand Association of Antiquarian Booksellers (ANZAAB) and the International League of Antiquarian Booksellers (ILAB), including two terms as ILAB President. Her experience has given her deep insight into the challenges of moveable cultural heritage, provenance, and international regulation.
