Contemporary Thai Art

Unlike its neighbours, Thailand was never formally colonised. Hence its unique mix of traditional institutions and western values in uneasy juxtaposition, with concepts like democracy and the rule of law often in conflict with more traditional values – leading to regular coups, new constitutions and frequent public protests.

Other Possible Worlds presents work by 12 Thai artists enthusiastically engaged in the debates around Thailand’s present and future, and in investigating the key issues facing Thai society – urbanization, environmental issues, inequality and the resulting high levels of disadvantage, and the political rights and duties of Thai people.

The exhibition includes painting, sculpture, photography, installation, neon, video, embroidery, prints and works on paper. The ethnicities and localities of the artists are equally diverse, but all are driven by a desire to imagine other possible futures for their country.

In the words of co-curator John Cruthers: ‘Thai art is creative, sophisticated and often socially or politically engaged’. This is a significant exhibition not to be missed, and this event presents the opportunity to see the shows and have explanations from curators and artists.

Speakers

Co-curators John Cruthers (16albermarle Project Space) and Haisang Javanalikhikara (Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok), together with artists Tada Hengsapkul, Thidarat Chantachua and Kasarin Himacharoen will be presenting in the exhibitions.
