SUMMARY:NSW TSG invitation to Fashion Victims: Past and Present
DESCRIPTION:The inspiration for this presentation to the NSW Textile Study Group (TSG) came from two exhibitions: Fashion Victims: The Pleasures and Perils of Dress in the 19th century held at the Bata Shoe Museum in Toronto\, Canada\, and Fashioned by Nature at the Victoria and Albert Museum. Today\, it is probable that most of us give little thought to how a piece of clothing may have been worn\, by whom or what processes have been used. This illustrated talk will take you on a thought-provoking journey to examine some of the effects of the historical uses of substances and devices in the name of beauty and challenge you to think about current practises in the fashion industry. \nMargaret White\nA teacher by profession\, Margaret returned to Australia in 2011 after residing in Singapore for almost 20 years. During that time\, she was heavily involved in the rapidly evolving National Heritage Board Museums via the volunteer group\, the Friends of Museums (FOM). She held numerous positions in FOM including President and Advisor. Her passion for Asian art and culture spurred her to complete an MA in Southeast Asian art from the National University of Singapore in 2006. She has been recognised by the Singapore government for her contribution to the arts. Travelling extensively in Asia has provided further impetus to her passion to collect and study textiles\, ceramics and fine art. Since 2012\, she has served on the Management Committee of The Asian Art Society of Australia (TAASA)\, where she is currently vice-president. \n  \n \nMachine-made silk net dress c. 1810 Victoria and Albert Museum\, London \n  \nCost:  TAASA Members $25   Non-members: $35\nLight refreshments will be served. \nPlease make all bookings and payments in advance\, via this website.\nFor further information email bookings@taasa.org.au
