The Lampung region of southern Sumatra has one of the most celebrated textile traditions of the Indonesian archipelago. Situated on the Sunda and Malacca Straits at the crossroads of cultural exchange, Lampung’s sumptuous textile traditions reflect the enormous wealth brought to the region over the centuries through trade, particularly in pepper and gold. These textiles have long been a feature at ceremonies celebrating rites of passage through the lifecycle, and were also important symbols of status, wealth and identity.
This talk will provide an illustrated introduction to the great diversity of textiles made in and associated with the Lampung region. The presentation will cover a broad range of textiles and also focus on some particular issues, such as the evolution of designs, European ships and messages written on skirtcloths.
Participants are invited to bring along their own examples of Lampung textiles to contribute to the discussion.
