SUMMARY:NATIONAL PICTURES
DESCRIPTION:National Gallery Singapore opened in 2015\, with a focus on the art of Singapore and Southeast Asia from the 19th to the present. Its collection exhibition Between Declarations and Dreams was the first long-term display of Southeast Asian art\, enabling a regional art history to be presented and important new narratives to be explored. Acquisitions of key works continued to strengthen the collection and provided a framework for temporary exhibitions. This presentation will look at how a regional art history was formulated in Singapore\, and how it was positioned within global art histories through the Gallery’s program of changing exhibitions\, including the current exhibition Ever Present: First People’s Art of Australia. \nRussell Storer is Head Curator\, International Art\, at the National Gallery of Australia\, Canberra.
