New Moon Jar, 2026, Neville French, wheel thrown and altered porcelain, feldspathic and limestone glazes with silver kintsugi. Courtesy of the artist and Gallerysmith.
Jinyoung Lee, co-curator of Moon Jar; An Axis will guide TAASA members through this exhibition at the KCCA in Sydney’s CBD. Axis explores Korean and Australian artists’ engagement with the Moon Jar together with forms it has inspired in a range of media.
The Moon Jar is widely regarded as an emblem of Korean aesthetic sensibilities, yet it is also the site of a continual reimagining across media by Korea’s contemporary artists. Axis establishes a cross-cultural discourse between Korean and Australian artists, examining at once the continuity of traditional practice, as well as the transformation which results from resituating the Moon Jar within a cultural context far removed from its historical beginnings.
Jinyoung Lee is the Director of Gallery LNL, a contemporary art gallery in Sydney. She holds a BFA in Ceramics from Sydney College of the Arts and an MFA in Ceramics from Ewha Womans University, Seoul and has been working in Sydney’s commercial gallery sector since 2013.
