Part of the Ca Mau Cargo (Chinese Yongzheng 1723-1735).
In her talk, Barbara will focus on the early textiles of West Aceh which consist of a broad range of embroidered hangings that are used for weddings and other rites of passage. The iconography of the cloths bespeaks a rich history of Islamic beliefs that reached these coastal communities. There are also finely woven silk sarongs and shoulder cloths, selendang that display supplementary weft patterns that are geometric, floral and calligraphic which were produced in a range of villages in Aceh. Many of these cloths were sold during the last five decades. I give attribution to the fine collection of Sim Tan who is based in Kuala Lumpur.
Dr. Barbara Leigh has a long -standing interest in arts of the Islamic Malay world. She has published and given lectures in this area. Her study of older Acehnese textiles began in the late 1970s. Since the brutal civil war and the devastating tsunami, Barbara has returned to the province several times, the latest visit being in 2017.
Members are invited to bring along their textiles.
