Batik Textiles

The Artifacts of Indonesia's Sociocultural Evolution

Join the speaker, Tony Sugiarta, as he embarks on an historical time train to unravel the social and cultural evolution depicted in Indonesian batik textiles throughout history. There is a story behind every batik textile and motif. You may discover fun facts, misconceptions or decode the message in your own batiks. From simple body covers, batik also transforms into contemporary art as a work that represents different ideologies.

In 2016, ex -pharmaceutical research scientist, Tony Sugiarta, embarked on a batik journey of discovery, visiting different batik towns across the Indonesian archipelago to acquire deeper knowledge about the craft. Inspired by the rich heritage, the human stories and the interesting intersection of arts and science, he set up Singapore- based, aNERD gallery, to connect artists and communities to learn about the culture, technological development and historical significance of these ancient art techniques.
