SUMMARY:Batik Peranakan or Batik Nonya?
DESCRIPTION:The Batik produced by the Peranakan Chinese in Java that were also widely used by the Nyonya in the British Straits Settlement is known as Batik Cina (Chinese Peranakan) or Batik Peranakan. The term\, Peranakan Chinese\, refers to the acculturated descendants of the early Chinese migrants to the Malay Peninsula and the Indonesian archipelago. Thienny Lee will firstly trace how the Peranakan Chinese batik producers in Java incorporated the indigenous batik applications into a part of the Peranakan Chinese aesthetic which resulted in a whole new range of Batik Peranakan for a largely Peranakan Chinese market. She will then examine the influences and the transformations of ‘European style\,’ Batik Nyonya\, upon Nyonya dress and the dominance of one style over the other. \nDr Thienny Lee \nDr Thienny Lee gained her PhD at the University of Sydney in 2016. Her PhD research focused on the dress and visual identity of the Straits Chinese women in the former British Straits Settlement. In SOAS London she has been giving lectures on the history of batik and the history of contemporary art in Southeast Asia in the post- graduate diploma course. She is a founding director of Thienny Lee Gallery in Sydney where her curatorial approach seeks to reconcile the cultural variations and hierarchies that create division between Western and Asian art. \nMembers are invited to bring along textiles relevant to the presentation. \nBookings: Email Chris Manning at bookings@taasa.org.au\, or phone Chris on 0412686025.
