Asian Art Viewing at Bonhams

The late Qing and early Republic period in China was a revolutionary time in many aspects, made possible by a class of pioneers who imported ideals from Europe and Japan in government, education, technology, medicine, and art. This special period produced a great many doctors, who practised Western medicine, although all had received Chinese traditional education in their early years. Many well-known historical figures, such as Sun Yat Sen and Lu Xun, all had their ‘doctor phases’, though they are no longer associated with their medical training.

The upcoming Bonhams Asian art sale, to be held on 22 May 2019 in Sydney, features Chinese paintings and works of art from five doctors, some active in the Republic period, and some still practising, amongst other private collections.

Yvett Klein, Bonhams Asian art expert will speak about the art on display.
