John Zubrzycki is the acclaimed author of seven books on India including Dethroned: The Downfall of India’s Princely States; Empire of Enchantment: The Story of Indian Magic; The Shortest History of India and The Shortest History of Delhi (forthcoming 2026). John graduated in South Asian history and Hindi from the ANU and wrote his PhD on Indian traditional magic at the UNSW. He worked in India as a diplomat and correspondent before joining The Australian as deputy foreign editor. As well as his interest in Indian popular culture, his research has focussed on the history of the erstwhile princely states and India’s nomadic communities. He has also led a number of tours to India including the northeastern states, West Bengal and the former Islamic kingdoms of Lucknow, Bhopal and Hyderabad.
