The Asian Arts Society of Australia
The Asian Arts Society of Australia (TAASA), is a national, independent association which, since 1991, has been promoting knowledge and appreciation of Asian visual, applied and performance arts, across history to the present and covering all parts of Asia.
TAASA aims to create a community of interest for our members. It does this through our full colour quarterly TAASA Review, published in hard copy and on-line for members, and through our many stimulating events throughout the year which provide members with an opportunity to meet face to face to share knowledge and enthusiasm. Areas of particular interest include painting and sculpture; ceramics, glass and metalware; textiles, dress, costume and jewellery; architecture; archaeology; music, dance and film.
The range of events aim to cater to all interests: informative lectures by experts, in person and on Zoom; symposia, tours of Asian and Asian-Australian exhibitions at galleries and museums; visits to private collections; convivial gatherings around Asian food; visits to Asian cultural sites and occasional tours to Asian countries. Events are notified by email, with priority access and lower prices one of the benefits of TAASA membership. TAASA’s Facebook page extends opportunities for people to keep up with Asian art related events and to connect with like-minded groups.
The TAASA Review, events and the website aspire to engage and challenge members and to keep them abreast of what is happening locally and globally across the arts of Asia.
We welcome your engagement with the TAASA community and look forward to your participation.

Textiles of Lombok: Revelations Over The Past 50 Years
Textiles of Lombok: Revelations Over The Past 50 Years
Although centrally situated in the Indonesian archipelago, Lombok has attracted relatively little attention from textile scholars, the largely Muslim Sasaks being widely viewed as rather dull relations of their exuberant Hindu Balinese neighbours across the strait to the west.
This richly illustrated lecture will hopefully dispel any notion of Sasak woven textiles as monotonous and inconsequential. And in doing so, provide some understanding of the roots of those Sasak textile traditions that survive in Lombok today.
